Here's our guide on how to visit Tanna and make the most out of your trip!
Many people make the mistake of visiting Tanna for just 2 or 3 days and not staying to enjoy the rest of the island. Foolish!
Tanna is incredibly cheap to visit (comparative to the natural beauty and lack of crowds, as you will discover). Here you can enjoy otherworldly sites all to yourself. If you've embraced island time and like walking, you can travel on foot between many destinations and only pay the entry fees. Hitchhiking can be hit and a miss - on one hand, everyone that passes you will stop to pick you up, from residential cars to tourist guides to construction trucks. On the otherhand, cars pass very infrequently and you may end up walking the whole way.
If you're not prepared to walk you will need to get a local car, which can be challenging. Very few locals - even tour operators - have their own cars. Your local tour operator may have organised for a car, but if an emergency has come up somewhere else in their village or within their community, they may be delayed getting to you. The beauty of Tanna is that the world doesn't revolve around tourists. Time goes slow here, and family is the paramount priority. Tanna is a place to be patient and to embrace "island time."
Internet reception on Tanna is truly awful, so don't be concerned if locals' replies are inconsistent, slow, or sporadic. Here are the names of some guides you can contact to get around. If you have trouble getting ahold of any of these families, use the Secrets of Travel Contact Form and we can try reach out to them for you.
Blue Cave Tanna - Daniel T
Daniel and his family are the land owners of the Blue Cave. Whilst many visitors organise their boat tour to the cave via the Rockwater Resort, you can also organise to travel by pickup truck with Daniel and his family. This will be cheaper and it's a lot more fun, provided you don't mind travelling like a local (in the back of a ute over very bumpy and rutted terrain). Daniel is in the process of clearing and prepping his family's land to build bungalows and host visitors. You can send him a message to discuss travelling with him to Blue Cave, staying in his bungalows (if they're ready), or camping with his family (if you have your own camping gear). You can also text him on +678 549 1119, +678 7650387, or +678 7658295.
Tanna Tours & Treehouse - Daniel
This Daniel has recently launched his business Tanna Tours & Treehouse after completing the build of his first treehouse next to his family home at the foot of the volcano. He is down to earth, friendly, and charges as little as 500 vatu for each trip. You can message him on Facebook with the link above, although he is more responsive on WhatsApp +678 774 7697. Internet reception is only available at the top of his treehouse, although if there's a strong storm the towers may be down.
There are so many things to do on Tanna aside from see the volcano! I spent 7 days on Tanna and regretted not staying 14. We stayed with two local families who adopted us as their own - just as we adopted them. Here you can truly experience "off-grid living" and down to earth existence. Nothing flashy, nothing expensive, nothing material. Just community and family above all else.
Below are the entrance prices for the trips you can do on Tanna Island. Each of these are the fee without a local guide / car. A local guide will charge as little as 500 vatu (AU$6 !!) to accompany you - meaning that they will walk with you to your destination (or organise a car if any are available), speak to the owners of the site, translate for you, and provide you information. If you're staying on Tanna for a while, befriend your guide and have a good time with them. If you treat them like your family, they'll treat you like theirs. And please consider tipping well!
