Cambodia still struggles with the legacy of decades of conflict. Despite major cleanup efforts since the 1990s, millions of unexploded landmines and cluster munitions remain buried across the country.
Landmines have been found all throughout Cambodia, but are most concentrated in rural areas, particularly on the border with Thailand. In the past four decades, over 60'000 people have been killed by landmines, and it is not uncommon to see people missing limbs due to detonations. While four million devices have been cleared, it is believed that there may still be up to six million devices hidden.
Tourist areas are generally safe as most popular destinations have been cleared. However, anywhere rural or off-the-beaten-track can be dangerous - including countrysides, some rice fields, and remote tracks.
You should only go off-road or off-trail is you have a local guide with up-to-date area information. If you're somewhere remote and you cannot see recent footprints/tyre tracks on the road, do not go further.
If you see a red Danger! Mines! sign anywhere, turn back immediately.
Do not camp in the open jungle. It's not worth the risk.
